«Zdravnevo» - museum estate of I.E.Repin invites you to visit the country-side which have inspired the great painter

16 km  outside Vitebsk, the town that has added quite a number of chapters to the history of avant-gardism and that has been sung in Mark Shagal’s paintings, and 2 km away from the Minsk-St.Petersburg highway there is a place called Zdravnevo. More than a hundred years ago in 1892 this estate was bought by an outstanding Russian painter Ilya Repin. He was fascinated by the beauty of the place and by hard-working good-natured people living there who revealed to him the world of their traditions and legends.

Ilya Yefimovich worked about his estate with great enthusiasm and this work gave him the invigorating strength of earth, the strength that nourishes his creative activities. Eight summers linked Repin to this corner with indissoluble blood ties. Repin’s father buried not far from this place in the village of Sloboda . The year of 1917 left a bleeding scar of these ties. The great master who lived in his new estate Penaty found himself cut off from his Motherland by the Soviet-Finnish borderline. Repin thought anxiously about Zdravnevo where the family of his younger daughter Tatyana lived under the constant danger of repression. Only in 1930, the year of the painter’s death, the family managed to leave the Soviet Union for good.

Zdravnevo saw the times of flourishment and decay, oblivion and restoration. But here there are still barely perceptible sings of inspiration embodied in the lyricism of the “Autumn flowers”, the sincerity and openness of the “Byelorussian”, the mysteriousness of the “Moonlit night”, the exciting sight of the “Duel” and in many other canvases and drawings of the great master, colours and lines of these masterpieces continue to delight visitors of many museum collections of the world.

The museum estate Zdravnevo is young but while the spring hidden in the shade of age-old pine and lime trees fills the beautiful Dvina river drop by drop with its invigorating strength there lives a hope of the revival of the estate and the hope of the Zdravnevo spring to flow onto the ocean of European culture.
